Here is a Glog that I created for the Spring 2009 Orientation session. Our “technology showcase” featured a service called Glogster.com where you could create online posters that include many different types of media. Here is the example that I used in the presentation:

One day, all of the people on the Internet will have an unlimited area to store all the digital media files they could ever want. Storage space is getting cheaper and digital files are getting smaller with the use of better compression techniques. What do people do now though? Let me [...]
A little over a year ago I posted Embed YouTube Video in PowerPoint Offline using various tools to allow the embedding of YouTube videos in PowerPoint presentations. In the mean time, YouTube has added a bazillion more videos, and some new tools have become available to make it much simpler to use that wonderful resource [...]
HandBrake is a free, open-source program that will take files from an unencrypted DVD and convert them into mpeg4 videos. This also includes the “h.264″ version of mpeg4 which is very high quality at lower bit-rates. In other words, you can start with a DVD movie that is 4GB in size and convert it to [...]
CDBurner XP is a free, Windows only program that allows you to burn data files to CDs and DVDs. You can also create audio CDs, create and burn ISO images (an ISO image would be a multiple file disc saved as a single file), and create bootable discs.

So, as I was contemplating homework after recently watching the newly released movie “Zack & Miri Make a Porno,” I came to an interesting revelation about the affect of such films on modern society.
No, seriously, stay with me on this one.
During and at the end of the movie, there occur various clips of a “film-within-a-film.” True, the majority of these clips are along the lines of a graphic nature (without extremely explicit renditions), but the hidden message behind these scenes reveals much more interesting information. The interest in this subject matter may possibly affect the modern media, generating more mainstream pieces related to the original subject matter. Such as the soon to be released “Twilight” has and will yet generate interest both in the Vampiric and Supernatural subject matter. I would not at all be surprised to see even more graphically-natured programming rise (pardon the pun) in the mainstream media. read more »
Here is a screencast of an example editing session using VideoSpin. We take the video that we digitized from Windows Movie Maker, import it, add it to the timeline, insert transitions and titles, and then send it to YouTube.
New media humor for the day. If only it were Blu-ray, it would be a good deal.
In my previous post I referred to the latest Windows Movie Maker program for Windows Vista has issues with frame accuracy. Well, here I present to you a very graphic demonstration (a screencast) of that lack of accuracy. What you will see is how erratic the native Windows Vista Movie Maker program [...]
In this short video, we introduce the concept of a video frame. Video is simply made up of a series of pictures, which we call frames, and they are then displayed at a rapid rate. The concept of a “frame of video” will be very important as we get into the heart of producing [...]
This post finds me answering the question of what have I been up to lately. Well, I’m trying to find easy ways to edit and produce video for as close to zero expense as possible. So I find myself on the Mac and on the PC side of this MacBook Pro working [...]
Here is a screencast demonstrating how to transfer your footage from a digital video (DV) camcorder to a Windows PC using Windows Movie Maker.
Step #1 - Shooting your video: We’ll assume that you have already shot the video for your project. However, YouTube has some good resources for shooting video, using lighting, and getting good sound at their “toolbox” site. Also a good starting point is their Making Videos page, which is part of their help pages. The [...]
Learning how to shoot video is, for the most part, on-the-job training. We assume you have taken at least one still photograph in your life. You get the person or other subject in the frame and press the button. Well that’s basically how shooting video works. You frame your subject and press record. How you [...]
The word firewire is actually a term that Apple coined for the technical standard known as the IEEE1394 interface. Firewire, IEEE1394, and Sony’s iLink all refer to the same high-speed interface that connects data devices together. It is similar to USB 2.0, but it is more appropriate for the transfer of video "data" from a [...]

Shopping for a camcorder has never been an easy experience, but there has been constant improvement in the quality of video that can be obtained. Before you buy a camera, know what your final destination for your video is. Is it YouTube? Then you won’t need the highest quality camera because this [...]

We live in interesting times (both a blessing and a curse) when it comes to digital video. The first step of any video project is to gather footage of your subject matter. For the past several decades video cameras have been using tape cassettes to save the video onto. In the [...]
Using new media means using online resources. The more we use online resources, especially ones dealing with sensitive information like bank accounts and student data, the more we need to think about creating strong passwords to protect those resources. If you’ve ever had trouble coming up with a password that was considered "strong", but would [...]
When you need a technology gadget for your computer, or for creating digital media, where do you start? Well, we in Teaching and Learning Technologies recommend you start at Cnet reviews. Cnet is a technology website and they do accept advertising, but they are very independent when it comes to their reviews. If the readers [...]
