Jihad and McWorld

I think that Jihad is the sense of Nationalism and styaing true to your culture and country. Like we said in class, this can be forced upon a person. I think that it can be both influenced and forced.  Some people in the U.S. are very passionate about their relgiion, tradition, culture, etc. This doesnt [...]

And we’re slow to acknowledge the knots in the laces

We’ve recently been discussing the impacts of globalization on culture.
I think a lot of people’s fear is perceived. With all progress we lose something. Whether it be an old tradition, or the importance of certain values to a society. Many times we feel nostalgic about these losses.
Take a look at the 50s. Often “the good [...]

Recently I have had to read a book called Nickle and Dimed for my sociology class. The book is about an experiement about what life would be like as a minimum wage worker. The author Barbara Ehrenreich has her Ph. D in Biology and is a well known author.  She worked as a maid, a waitress, [...]

Culture

In class last Thursday, we had a disscusion about culture and what it was. It dragged my memory back to the preliminary orientation before I left to Germany, when we did an activity pertaining to this topic.
Known fondly by the AFS Volunteers as the “Iceberg”, it gets the students thinking about how much culture [...]

Third Expert Study

Hungary’s economy has been boosted because of its foreign manufacturers. Each year Hungary is seeing a very noticeable difference between domestically and foreign owned companies. Foreign companies hold about 25 percent of Hungary’s GDP.
In 1989, General Electric Company bought a large stake in Tungsram. Tungsram is a European company that manufactures light bulbs. With [...]

Now make it make some sense to me

This election was an historic one. More people voted than in any other election. All Americans recognized the significance of electing Barack Obama into the white house. What I think many people failed to realize was that other countries were just as interested in this election as we were.
We discussed this point in my sociology [...]

Obamamania

Whether you agree with the man or not, citizens of the world across nation borders have celebrated Obama’s presidential win. As shown by the photographs below, people from Australia to India will be affected more than ever by this new president. With the borders between countries becoming less and less important, people from all places [...]

I put people on the map that have never seen a map

So, because I’m feeling a little behind on blogging, I spent some time watching youtube videos about globalization. Surprisingly, there are several out there.
After watching a few of these videos, I’ve been given a lot more to process. One thing is that globalization is about more than economies and opportunities becoming equal, it’s also about power. As [...]

In Defense of Globalization

So I read Chapter 10 of this book “In Defense of Globalization” by Jagdish Bhagwhati. It was a really interesting chapter on labor and wages.
Basically it confronted the fear that by outsourcing to countries that pay cheaper wages, wages in our country will drop to be competitive. What Bhagwati says is that we’re actually in [...]

Important Globalization Questions

1) What effects will globalization have on American jobs, companies, and financial institutions?
2) Is education the solution to surviving in a globalizing world? If so, what will happen to Americans that just don’t have the mental capacity to earn a college degree?
3) Can limits on Imports such as tariffs and quotas shield America from the [...]

Maple Leaf Lovers

Politically and economically Canada shares strong ties with the U.S.  They share the largest undefended border in the world and have cooperatively joined many of the same trade organizations. Since Canada’s entrance into free trade agreements with the United States they have dramatically increased their GDP through trade and integration with the U.S. economy. Through [...]

What did Friedman Mean?

With his book “The World is Flat” Friedman compares himself to Christopher Columbus as he adamantly argues that the current forces of globalization have turned the world flat. This notion of a flat world refers to how barriers in trade, opportunities, and personal contributions to society are being eliminated, thus creating a level playing [...]

Humble opinion vs. Class opinion

Daniel C. Abbondanzo’s definition of globalization:
The intermingling of economies and cultures on the world wide scale making it possible to widen the pool of knowledge and create the ability for econmic specialization and loss of ethnic identity.
When my freshman seminar began the class discussion to define globalization I found my opinions to have similarities with [...]

Expert Study: Hungary

Hungary, formally known as the Republic of Hungary, is located in Central Europe. It is landlocked by Austria, Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania, Serbia, Croatia, and Slovenia. The capital of Hungary is Budapest. It consists of 19 different counties. The official language is Hungarian.
Their government is a parliamentary democracy and you must be 19 years [...]

The Second Industrial Revolution

Response to the article: In NC, A Second Industrial Revolution
American manufacturing in the 21st century is producing more goods than ever before. We make up almost  one-fourth of the global manufacturing, even Japan and China do not even come close. Although this may be the case, many manufacturing jobs in the United States, such as textile or [...]

Quimonda

Earlier on my blog I talked about where my dad and uncle work, Quimonda, and how that is an example of globalization. Well Quimonda just layed offabout 1500 workers and closed down a huge lab. This is putting a ton of people out of a job. I think that eventually this company will be sold [...]

God, I feel dumb

I’m sitting here, babysitting my seven-year-old nephew. He’s your average first-grader in a Fairfax County public school. We’re watching Sesame Street. There’s Big Bird singing with some out-of-the-ordinarily cute and ethnic looking girl with pigtails. Just like back in 1992, when we all probably watched Sesame Street as well. Just like always.
Except this is not [...]

Give me a yellow brick road and a Japanese car..

Once upon a time, Dr. Greenlaw commented on my blog and asked me “Do you think that jobs and other economic opportunities are a zero sum game, so that if people in another country get jobs there will be fewer jobs for us? That’s kind of what your post sounds like.”
I read that, and knew [...]

Globalization Visualization

As a class, we came up with this definition for globalization: the rapidly accelerating process, which enables, encourages and advances connections between both individuals and groups worldwide, allowing for the exchange and influence of cultural, technological and political ideas and their applications.
We then had to find a picture that we think illustrated it. So here’s mine:

Ireland

Thirty five years ago the country we know as Ireland joined the European Community. However, they became independent from the United Kingdom decades before on December 6th, 1921. Just a little bigger than West Virginia, about 69,000 km2, Ireland is home to over [...]

Globalization Image

I think that this picture represents globalization because it shows an American company in a foreign country. Starbucks can be found all over the world. It shows just house easy whole businesses can be moved into countries on the other side of the world. Just imagine what else can be moved into another country.

First post

This is my post on Globalization about Monkeys in action.

Globalization Voice Threads
